What Are the Different Types of Spray Tans?

If you long for a golden glow all year long, you’re not the only one! Unfortunately, exposure to UV radiation is a good way to get skin cancer, wrinkles and age spots. That’s why so many people turn to spray tanning.

If you’re new to spray tans, you might not realize that there are four main types. When you go for a spray tan, DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is sprayed onto your skin. DHA is the active ingredient in spray-tanning solutions that creates the tan color. When applied to your skin, it coats the dead surface skin cells with the tanning color, designed to match the color of those skin cells. Once you get your spray tan, it takes 7 to 14 days for the surface layer of skin to exfoliate.

Here’s an overview of the main types of spray tans:

Airbrush spray tanning

Airbrush spray tanning uses airbrushes to apply color to the skin. A technician will use the air brush to apply the tanning solution to your skin. This ensures that you get even, all-over color and don’t miss a spot. Airbrush tans take about 12 hours to appear and last for about 4 to 10 days. Avoid shaving, rubbing or exfoliating your skin during this time.

Booth spray tanning

Booth spray tanning gets an unnecessarily bad rap (especially if you watched that episode of Friends!). However, this method of spray tanning is easy, accessible and will last up to 30 days. Since you’re in a completely private booth, you can remove all of your clothing for an even, all-over tan. The high-pressure nozzles push the tanning solution deeper into your skin for a longer-lasting tan.

Which type of spray tan is right for me?

When you’ve never tried a spray tan before, it can be intimidating. Which type should you pick? Will it come out orange? What if you don’t like the tan?

First of all, spray-tanning solution comes in a variety of shades. No matter what your skin tone, there should be a spray tan color that’s right for you. In rare cases, someone may be too fair for a spray tan to look natural.

The type you choose depends on how long you want it to last. If you’re going to an event where there will be a lot of photos taken, airbrush spray tanning offers the best opportunity for an even, customized look. You might choose airbrush spray tanning if it’s your first time and you’re not sure if you want it to last for a long time.

Booth spray tanning is easy and convenient, but it does last a long time. If you find yourself too tan, you can exfoliate thoroughly to remove the dead skin cells. There are even lotions that contain chemical exfoliants to hurry the process along.
