Waxing Aftercare Tips to Keep You Comfortable

There’s plenty of information out there about how to prepare for waxing appointments, especially if it’s your first time—but what about body waxing aftercare? Taking care of your skin isn’t a one-time-only proposition. Once you’ve gone for your body waxing appointment, you’ll want to make sure that you set yourself up to get the best results possible.

Here’s how to make it work.

What to avoid

After your waxing appointment, your esthetician will let you know what to avoid. While their advice may vary depending on the client, there are some key points to remember.

Over the next one to two days, you’ll need to avoid hot baths and showers—stick to cool and lukewarm water. That means that you should avoid hot tubs, saunas and other steam treatments, too. Don’t swim in chlorinated pools, and make sure that you wear loose, breathable, comfortable clothing to allow your skin to heal.

If you exercise, plan to take the next two days after your appointment as a rest day; try to avoid activities that will make you sweat. Don’t scratch or touch the waxed area with your unwashed hands, and don’t apply products like deodorant, lotions, perfumes or powders unless your esthetician clears them beforehand.

This will get you over the initial hurdle and significantly reduce the likelihood that you’ll develop bumps or ingrown hairs.

Waxing aftercare

After the first day or so, your skin will be in much better shape. Plan to apply a soothing, antiseptic cream or oil (tea tree oil is a good ingredient to look for) to the waxed area. This will kill bacteria and other pathogens, which can clog your pores and cause unsightly bumps.

While you should exfoliate occasionally (this will protect against ingrown hairs) you should also take it easy after body waxing. Once or twice per week is usually all you’ll need to make sure that your skin is purging dead skin cells and repairing irritation properly.

Don’t forget to moisturize your skin thoroughly. Waxing not only gets rid of unwanted body hair, but it can perform exfoliation, too. Once you’ve gotten rid of all that dead skin, the new skin underneath needs help staying moisturized and smooth.

Is body waxing right for you?

Don’t let these tips and tricks scare you off. After your first waxing appointment, it will all seem like second nature. Sure, you’ll have to skip the sauna and tanning appointments for a few days afterwards, but the soft, smooth and glowing skin will make it all worth it.

If you’re concerned about anything to do with body waxing, including aftercare, potential pain and side effects, talk to an esthetician about your concerns ahead of time. They can help design a plan that will ensure you get the exact results you want: smooth, hair-free skin with no bumps or irritation.
