How to Prepare for Your Waxing Appointment

Are you ready for your waxing treatment? Healthy waxing preparation requires specific skin prep for waxing. Use the following tips to make your appointment as enjoyable and effective as possible:

  • Check your skin: Before your appointment, check the condition of your skin. Do you have any beauty marks or moles? If so, you should point these out to your esthetician so he or she can take appropriate steps to protect these areas during waxing. If you have any inflammation or broken skin, these areas will need to heal before you can proceed with your waxing treatment.
  • Control the grow: For proper wax preparation, you don’t want the hair to be too short or too long. If it is too short, it will be difficult for the wax to pick up the hair and remove it. At the same time, if the hair is too long, the wax cannot adhere appropriately, and the process will be more painful. Aim for two to three weeks of hair growth. For underarm, leg and bikini hair, between an eighth and a quarter of an inch is the ideal length.
  • Exfoliate (gently): One or two days before your wax treatment, gently exfoliate your skin. Do not use harsh scrubs. This light exfoliation will help improve the effectiveness of the wax treatment. Use a rough washcloth and gently clean your skin to exfoliate and avoid leaving the skin sensitive to pain.
  • Moisturize (but not the day of): Healthy skin prep for waxing includes the right amount of moisturizer. Well-moisturized skin will make the wax more effective. However, you don’t want to coat the hair with lotions that will interfere with the wax treatment. Use moisturizer on the days leading up to your treatment, but don’t use it on the day of your waxing appointment.
  • Clean and clean again: When you receive a wax treatment, this can leave your skin vulnerable to infection. Keep the bikini area extremely clean before and after your treatment to avoid bacterial growth.
  • Discontinue retinol: Products that contain retinol can leave your skin at risk of injury during waxing treatment. As part of your waxing preparation, stop taking retinol-based products 14 days before your waxing appointment. If you are taking Accutane, talk to your dermatologist about stopping this medication four weeks before your treatment.
  • Consult with experts: Before your treatment, contact your local esthetician with any questions or concerns about skin prep for waxing. If you have any special skin care needs or considerations, discuss these with your wax treatment professional. This will ensure you receive the best customized treatment possible to meet your needs.
